• If you didn’t hear already, there was a bit of a kerfuffle at the Robyn DJ show at the U St Music Hall on Saturday, 7/7, where one of the security guards allegedly asked a gay couple to leave when he saw them dancing together. U-Hall’s co-owner Will Eastman wrote a lengthy apology and offered to host a free DJ night for the couple and their friends. • Local Venue News: Baltimore’s Sonar is closed, as of today [Baltimore CityPaper]. The news was first posted officially by Maryland DeathFest on Facebook, who wrote, “Sonar (the home of MDF since 2006) is closing. Why? That’s not important. What is important is that we’ve known about this situation for months, and we were already searching for a new location only a few days after MDF X ended. Currently, we have THREE locations to choose from, all of which would be in Baltimore.” The Baltimore CityPaper wrote an article back in May that the Feds had named Sonar in a pot conspiracy indictment. We’re working to figure out where all of the shows scheduled for Sonar are moving (you can follow our list of Sonar shows here).

• Most readers of this blog probably aren’t really into opera, but I still urge you to read Anne Midgette’s thoughtful column Peter and the Press [Washington Post], about how Peter Gelb, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, deals with negative press: namely, bullying radio station WQXR to remove a blog post containing a negative review and pressuring Opera News to stop reviewing the Met. Fascinating food for thought about criticism in the modern era (when internet postings can just disappear on a whim) and censorship in general.

• Preview: Brian Ossip on Thrice [DC Music Live]. Performing tonight at the Howard Theatre. All Things Go also previews the show and has a profile on opening band O’Brother.

• Heads Up: Robyn has added a second U-Hall DJ show [Washington Post].

• Preserve this: Chris Richards on the 25 recordings being added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry [Washington Post]. This year’s additions include Parliament’s 1975 album Mothership Connection, a collection of news reports from Edward R. Murrow, Leonard Bernstein’s debut performance with the New York Philharmonic, Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”, and hip-hop Magna Carta “Rapper’s Delight” by Sugarhill Gang.

• Heading to Maryland DeathFest this weekend? Even if you’re not, NPR’s DeathFest Preview will give you plenty of new metal tunes to check out.
