Looking back on 2014; looking ahead to 2015

Happy New Year! 2014 was the fourth full year of ShowlistDC, and we certainly couldn’t have kept this site running without all of you who support the site by playing shows, putting on shows, telling me about shows, going to shows, and supporting live music in the greater DC area.

I do a little statistical analysis every year (here are the ones from 2011, 2012, and 2013), so here are some stats on what ShowlistDC did in 2014:

      • We listed 11,266 shows at 489 different venues in DC, Virgina, and Maryland. (We’ve got 1,165 shows already listed for 2015!)
      • May was our biggest show month, with 1,106 different shows listed. Three other months had over 1,000 events: March (1,080), June (1,042), and October (1,004).
      • Not surprisingly, most of our events were listed on Saturdays (2,605 shows) or on Fridays (2,315 shows).
      • As in the past three years, two venues had over 400 events listed in 2014: the Kennedy Center (633 events) and Jammin’ Java (422 events).
      • We ended the year with 1,014 Facebook likes, 1,952 twitter followers, and 204 Instagram followers.
      • We’re always sad to see venues close, and several DIY venues hosted their last show this year, including Paper Sun, the Far Out House, Ft. Loko. But when one DIY venue stops hosting shows, another one always pops up to keep live music going strong in DC– and we’re excited to find new places to see live music in 2015.

If there are any ideas for things you’d like to see on ShowlistDC or on this blog, please let me know, either with a comment here or an email to showlistdc@gmail.com!

And as always, feel free to look for me at shows– I went to 109 shows in 2014 and certainly plan to attend at least that many next year! Come up and say hi– and keep on supporting live music in 2014!

Looking back on 2013; looking ahead to 2014

Happy New Year! 2013 was the third full year of ShowlistDC, and we certainly couldn’t have done it without all of you who put on shows, play shows, let me know about shows, go to shows, or otherwise support live music in this area.

I do a little statistical analysis every year (here are the ones from 2011 and 2012), so here are some stats on what ShowlistDC did in 2013:

• We listed 11,568 shows at over 450 different venues in DC, Virgina, and Maryland. (We’ve got 1,488 shows already listed for 2014!)
• March was our biggest show month, with 1,108 different shows listed. Four other months had over 1,000 events: October (1,096), April (1,076), June (1,063), and May (1,022).
• Not surprisingly, most of our events were listed on Saturdays (2,630 shows) or on Fridays (2,373 shows).
• As in the past two years, two venues had over 400 events listed in 2013: the Kennedy Center (588 events) and Jammin’ Java (437 events).
• We ended the year with 839 Facebook likes and 1412 twitter followers.
• We saw venues open (Gypsy Sally’s, Bethesda Blues & Jazz Club) and close (Recher Theatre, 9th & Beats).
• . . . and we’re super proud to have put together a show ourselves, with our friends at Hometown Sounds DC. December 12th at Tropicalia is a night we won’t soon forget, so many thanks to the three awesome bands that performed– Heavy Breathing, the Jet Age, and Tereu Tereu– as well as all of you who came out that night.

And as always, feel free to look for me at shows– I went to 153 shows in 2013 and certainly plan to attend at least that many next year! Come up and say hi– and keep on supporting live music in 2014!

Looking back on 2012; looking ahead to 2013

Happy New Year! As we wrap up the second full year of ShowlistDC, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who’s been using this site. Thanks for telling me about shows, thanks for mentioning this site in interviews (Cigarette on DCMusicDownload) or on your blogs (DCRockLive), thanks for spreading the word about ShowlistDC to other music fans, and most importantly, thanks to all the local musicians who keep this area such a vibrant music scene. Thanks especially for everyone’s patience and understanding this fall when I had to suspend my daily Music Notes after my laptop was stolen.

I did a statistical wrap-up at the end of 2011, and now here are some statistics on what ShowlistDC did in 2012:

• We listed 11,223 shows (whoa! that’s almost 43% more shows than last year!) at nearly 400 different venues in DC, Virginia, and Maryland.
• June was our biggest show month, with 1,120 different events listed. Two other months had over 1,000 events: October (1,077) and March (1,043).
• Not surprisingly, most of our events were listed on Saturdays (2,507 shows) or on Fridays (2,252 shows).
• As in 2011, two venues had over 400 events listed in 2012: the Kennedy Center (644 events) and Jammin’ Java (462 events).
• We ended the year with 573 facebook likes and 790 twitter followers.
• We recommended 52 shows.
• We saw venues open (Howard Theatre, 9th & Beats, Rams Head Center Stage), close (Sonar, Red Palace, Sinix), pop up (Artomatic 2012), stop hosting shows (Asefu’s), and change names (Jaxx in Springfield became Empire last January).

I’ve got a lot planned for 2013. Some things aren’t going to change– I’m still going to list and recommend a ton of shows, but I’m going to continue working on the detailed venue info page, and I’m hoping to bring back some sort of daily or regular blog here. I will certainly continue to work with local venues and bands here to give away tickets to shows and other things to the music fans who read this site.

If there are any ideas for things you’d like to see on ShowlistDC or on this blog, please let me know, either with a comment here or an email to showlistdc@gmail.com!

And, as always, feel free to look for me at shows– I went to 113 shows in 2012 and certainly plan to attend at least that many next year! Come up and say hi– and keep on supporting live music in 2013!

ShowlistDC Status

For those who haven’t heard, the ShowlistDC laptop was stolen last week. As a result, Music Notes are going on hiatus, and general site updates will be sporadic while I get back on my feet.

Apologies for the inconvenience….and thanks for your patience and understanding.

Looking back on 2011; looking ahead to 2012

Happy New Year! As we wrap up the first full year of ShowlistDC, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who’s been using this site. Thanks for sending me emails, thanks for telling me about shows, thanks for inviting me to your events on Facebook– oh! and hey, thanks to all the musicians out there who put on such awesome shows for all of us!

The idea for this site was hatched in November of 2010, when a friend of mine pointed me to ShowlistAustin, a show listing site started by one of my friends from back when I lived in Austin (unfortunately for me, that site was launched after I had already moved up to DC). I had been keeping track of a ton of DC-area shows already, since I’m a freelance writer, so I decided to take all of my information and put it up on the web for other people to use.

Here’s a little wrap-up of what ShowlistDC did in 2011:

• We listed 7,857 shows at over 200 different venues in DC, Virginia, and Maryland.
• October was our biggest show month, with 894 different events listed. The next busiest month was September, with 794.
• Not surprisingly, most of our events were listed on Saturdays (1,624 shows) or Fridays (1,497 shows).
• Only two venues had over 400 events listed in 2011: the Kennedy Center (437 events) and Jammin’ Java (417 events).
• In December, we launched this blog and gave away our first pair of tickets, to the 9:30 Club‘s New Years Eve show with the Drive-By Truckers, Booker T, and the Alabama Shakes.
• We ended the year with 306 facebook likes and 328 twitter followers.
• We recommended 131 different shows.
• We saw venues open (Fillmore Silver Spring, Baltimore SoundStage, the re-opening of Lubber Run in Arlington) and close (Bourbon Street, the Corpse Fortress in Silver Spring, the art space Hole in the Sky, the Hexagon in Baltimore). As of today, Jaxx in Springfield now has new owners (check out the article I wrote about Jaxx on TBD.com).

I’ve got a lot planned for 2012 as well. In addition to all the concert listings and recommendations that you can currently find here, I’m working on fuller venue information pages (with details about parking, public transportation, and tickets for each venue, as well as other info like which venues have cash-only bars and which venues sell food). I’d like to give away more tickets, and I’ve been talking to some local bands about doing some giveaways of their albums here as well. If there are any ideas for things you’d like to see on ShowlistDC or on this blog, please let me know (either comment here or send an email to showlistdc[at]gmail.com)!

Oh, and feel free to look for me at shows too– I went to 132 shows in 2011 and plan to double that in 2012! (Ok, I probably won’t be able to double that, but I do go to a lot!) I wear a ShowlistDC hoodie when it’s cold out, so I’m pretty easy to spot. Come up and say hi– and keep supporting live music in 2012!

New blog on ShowlistDC.com

So after running ShowlistDC.com for over a year(!) now, I thought that it was time to make the site a little bit more interactive– or at least to have a little bit more text content besides just the recommended shows page. WordPress was remarkably easy to set up and configure and integrate into the site; in case anyone else is looking to do so, here are a few helpful pages I used along the way:

how to install WordPress (specifically, with my web host, 1and1.com)
WordPress’s tips for integrating WordPress into a web site
burnSEO’s tips for integrating WordPress into a web site
WordPress’s tutorial on theme development
• Setting up a gravatar

….and that’s all there was to it! I hope to be doing some cool stuff with this blog in the future, so start keeping an eye on this space!
