Ticket giveaway: Father John Misty at the 9:30 Club, Wednesday, 10/23/13

Father John Misty is coming to the 9:30 Club this Wednesday night, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me why you want to see this show, and I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org) on Wednesday (the day of the show) at NOON. Be sure to use a valid email address when you enter, so I can contact you if you win (and don’t worry: your email address won’t be posted publicly when you comment on this entry and won’t be added to any sort of mailing list). If you’re a hotmail user, please add showlistdc@gmail.com to your address book or no-spam list, as other hotmail users have had problems with emails from us not getting through. Also note that since the show is on Wednesday night, we’ll ask winners to respond by COB on Wednesday, so make sure you’re checking your email regularly!

Joshua Tillman, aka J. Tillman, aka Father John Misty first gained recognition as the drummer for Fleet Foxes, but he’s had quite a prolific solo career as well: he was recording solo albums and opening for Damien Jurado in the pacific NW long before he was asked to join the Fleet Foxes lineup. He signed with Sub Pop and last year released the fantastic Fear Fun, so expect to hear some of those songs live at this show. Father John Misty has sold out several shows in DC over the last two years– including a 9:30 club show earlier this year– so for those that have missed his previous shows (or know how great they were), this is a good second chance to see him! FJM has made an interesting choice, too: rather than having an opening band, the first act at this show is comedian Kate Berlant.

We’ve put some videos at the bottom of this post, so check those out and let us know why you want to see this show. Did you miss the last few Father John Misty shows? Are you curious to see what happens when a comedian is thrown on to an indie-rock show? Are you a Fleet Foxes fan that’s curious about Tillman’s solo project? Or are you just looking for an excuse to get out of the house on a Wednesday night? Whatever your reason, it should be a great show, so leave a comment below to enter to win the free tickets!

Ticket giveaway: the Dismemberment Plan at the 9:30 Club, Sunday 10/20/13

the Dismemberment Plan is coming to the 9:30 Club this weekend for TWO SHOWS(!), and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets to the Sunday 10/20 show with Paint Branch! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me why you want to see the D-Plan live, and I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org) on Friday, 18 October at NOON. Also note that since the show is this weekend, we’ll ask winners to respond by COB on Friday, so make sure you’re checking your email regularly!

the Dismemberment Plan is a DC indie-rock band that formed in the early 90s and released four albums before breaking up in 2003…..and then, surprisingly, they reunited in 2011 and just released a new album, Uncanney Valley this week! There’s been lots written about the reunion– check out some recent articles by NPR, the City Paper, Metro.us, and, uh, Wired. They’re pretty legendary in DC music lore, and we’ve put some videos from the band’s history at the bottom of this post, so check those out and let us know why you want to see this show. Did you ever get to see them “back in the day”? Did you miss their handful of reunion shows in the past few years? Or are you just hankering to see their new material played live? Or, maybe you really dig opening act Paint Branch and want to see them on the big stage! Whatever your reason, it should be a great show, so leave a comment below to enter to win the free tickets!

If you’re new to ShowlistDC and wondering what this site is all about, check out our extensive calendar of upcoming events in the greater DC area (including Northern VA and Baltimore) and our concert recommendations. You can also follow us on twitter @showlistdc or like us on Facebook!

If you come across this post after the contest has closed, or if you’re not the lucky winner, then you can pick up tickets for $25, plus service fees, via ticketfly.com. Remember that the D-Plan are playing TWO 9:30 Club shows this week (they’re also playing on Saturday, 10/19 with Deleted Scenes), so if you can’t make it to the Sunday show that we’re giving tickets away to, you’ve got another chance to catch them!

The contest has ended and the winner has been contacted. Thanks for entering!

Ticket giveaway: Fiona Apple & Blake Mills @ Lincoln Theatre, Saturday 26 October 2013

Singer-songwriter Fiona Apple is coming to the Lincoln Theatre for two shows in October. The first one is already sold out, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets to the newly-added second show on Saturday, October 26! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me which song you’d most want to hear live. On Friday, 27 September at noon Eastern, I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org). Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly!

Fiona Apple burst onto the scene with her debut album Tidal in 1996 (featuring the singles “Criminal” and “Shadowboxer”), followed that up with the lengthy-titled When the Pawn…, and then went on a lengthy hiatus. She eventually returned to making music, releasing Extraordinary Machine in 2005 and dropping another lengthily-titled album last year, The Idler Wheel…. She doesn’t tour very often, so this is a rare opportunity to see her live.

Apple is touring with California singer-songwriter Blake Mills, who has also produced albums for Jesca Hoop and Sara Watkins (oh, and he wrote/produced a song for Sky Ferreira as well). His debut album is called Break Mirrors. You can check out a few of Fiona Apple’s and Blake Mills’s songs via the videos embedded below, and while you’re giving those a spin, let us know which song you’d most want to either of them perform in concert.

Ticket giveaway: Mike Doughty at the 9:30 Club, Friday, 22 November 2013

Win tickets before they go on sale!

Singer-songwriter Mike Doughty is releasing an album of re-recorded songs from his time in his old band Soul Coughing. He’ll be playing those songs at the 9:30 Club on Friday, 22 November, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets, before they go on sale!! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me which Soul Coughing song you’d most want to hear Doughty cover in concert. On Thursday, 29 August at midnight Eastern, I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org), and I’ll let the winner know before tickets go on sale on Friday morning. Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly!

Soul Coughing was a NYC-based alt-rock band from 1992 to 2000, and they broke up due to member disputes….so don’t expect to see a Soul Coughing reunion tour any time soon. But this show might be the closest you’ll get– after years of not really playing the old Soul Coughing songs live, former SC frontman Mike Doughty has just recorded an album of Soul Coughing covers (it’s due out on 9/17, and it’s called Circles Super Bon Bon Sleepless…). He’s touring in support of that and will be playing an all-Soul Coughing covers set at the 9:30 Club on November 22nd! As an aside, if you’re interested in reading about Doughty’s time in Soul Coughing, he wrote a book about that, which was published last year: The Book of Drugs.

You can check out a few of Soul Coughing’s songs via the videos embedded below, and while you’re giving those a spin, let us know which song you’d most want to hear Doughty cover in concert.

Ticket giveaway: Luray at 6th & I, Saturday, 24 August 2013

Banjo-driven indie folk band Luray is headlining 6th & I‘s intimate Downstairs space this Saturday, 24 August, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets! This is a particularly special show, because it’s the CD Release show for the group’s debut album The Wilder, which comes out officially next Tuesday August 27th. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me what you’d be doing on Saturday instead of going to this show, and I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org) on Thursday, 22 August at noon Eastern. Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly!

Luray is fronted by DC-based singer-songwriter Shannon Carey, and The Wilder was recorded in Eau Claire, Wisconsin with her brother Sean Carey (of S. Carey and Bon Iver) and also features her brother Colin Carey (vibes/drums) and husband Gabriel Wisniewski (electric guitar). But the heart of the band lies with her banjo, which adds hints of bluegrass to her folky indie-rock. Luray has been playing shows all over town for the past few years, playing with locals like Justin Jones, Justin Trawick, and Ms. Fridrich, as well as touring musicians like Jim White and the Spring Standards.

You can hear Luray’s music over at her Soundcloud page, and I’ve linked a few videos below.

Opening this show is local folk-rock band Kindlewood, whose music you can hear on their bandcamp page. We’ve put a Kindlewood video below as well!

Ticket giveaway: Okkervil River at the 9:30 Club, Monday 23 September 2013

Okkervil River is coming to the 9:30 Club on Monday, 23 September, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me what song you’d most want to hear them play, and I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org) on Thursday, 8 August at midnight Eastern. Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly!

Okkervil River is an indie-rock band from Austin, TX, that formed in 1998. They’ve released a ton of awesome albums (I think my favorite of theirs is probably 2005′s Black Sheep Boy) and have a new one coming out in September called the Silver Gymnasium, so I’m betting they’ll be playing lots of new songs at the show. In addition to their own music, Okkervil River have done a few other interesting projects; they were Roky Erickson‘s backing band for the excellent album True Love Cast Out All Evil, and to help promote their 2008 release the Stand Ins, they had a bunch of their friends record cover versions of their songs (including Bon Iver and AC Newman & Will Sheff).

The opening act for this show is singer-songwriter Mackenzie Scott, who records under the name Torres and released her first album, Torres, earlier his year.

We’ve put some Okkervil River videos (including a new song!!) and a Torres video at the bottom of this post, so check those out and let us know which song you’d most want to hear live at this show!

Ticket giveaway: Frightened Rabbit at the 9:30 Club, Tuesday, 29 October 2013

Win tickets before they go on sale!

Scottish indie-pop band Frightened Rabbit is coming to the 9:30 Club on Tuesday, 29 October for two sets, and ShowlistDC is giving away two pair of tickets! This giveaway is extra-special for two reasons: first, we’re giving away tickets before they even go on sale to the public! Second, since they’re playing two shows on the same night (6 PM & 10 PM), we’re giving away a pair of tickets to each of the shows! So all you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me which of the two shows (early or late) you want to go to. If you truly have no preference, you can enter for either (but you can’t win for both shows!). On Thursday, 1 August at midnight Eastern, I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org), and I’ll let the winner know before tickets go on sale on Friday morning. Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly!

Frightened Rabbit formed in 2003 and have released four solid albums: 2006′s Sing the Greys, 2008′s the Midnight Organ Fight, 2010′s the Winter of Mixed Drinks, and most recently, 2013′s Pedestrian Verse. More importantly, they put on a great live show; I’ve gotten the chance to review their show twice: April 2010 (at the Black Cat) and November 2010 (at the 9:30 Club). Note that the band has gotten even more popular since 2010; they sold out the 9:30 Club in April of this year, so it makes sense that they’re playing two different shows in the same night. (and did we mention that we’re giving away tickets to both of their shows???)

You can check out a few of Frightened Rabbit’s songs via the videos embedded below, and while you’re giving those a spin, let us know if you want to go to the early show or the late show (or if you have no preference!).

The contest has now ended and the winner has been contacted. Thank you!

Ticket Giveaway: Savages at the 9:30 Club, Tuesday, 10 September 2013

Savages are coming to the 9:30 Club on Tuesday, 10 September, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me why you want to see this show, and I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org) on Thursday, 1 August at midnight Eastern. Be sure to use a valid email address when you enter, so I can contact you if you win (and don’t worry: your email address won’t be posted publicly when you comment on this entry and won’t be added to any sort of mailing list). Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly!

Savages are an all-female post-punk revival band from London that formed in 2011. Obviously influenced by Siouxsie & the Banshees, Savages’ first album Silence Yourself came out earlier this year to great critical acclaim, but the hype had already been building: they played a show in July at the Rock & Roll Hotel that sold out months in advance(!). You can read some reviews of that show here (DCist’s Francis Chung) and here (the Washington Post’s Aaron Leitko).

We’ve put some videos from the band’s debut album at the bottom of this post, so check those out and let us know why you want to see this show. Did you miss out on tickets to their Rock & Roll Hotel show? Did you make it out to that show and want to see them again? Do you love the album? Or do you just want to check out the show and see what all the hype is about? Whatever your reason, it should be a great show, so leave a comment below to enter to win the free tickets!

Ticket Giveaway: Beth Orton at the 9:30 Club, Wednesday, 7 August 2013

Beth Orton is coming to the 9:30 Club on Wednesday, 7 August, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me what song you’d most want to hear her perform, and I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org) on Thursday, 18 July at midnight Eastern. Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly!

Beth Orton is a folk/folktronica singer-songwriter from England who started her career with collaborations with William Orbit and the Chemical Brothers but soon transitioned to her own solo releases, starting in 1996 with Trailer Park, which featured the haunting “She Cries Your Name” and a cover of Phil Spector/the Ronettes’ “I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine”. She followed that up a few years later with Central Reservation, whose song “Stolen Car” I actually remember getting some radio air play back in the late 1990s. After a few more albums, Orton went quiet for six(!) years, finally releasing a new album last year, Sugaring Season, which I liked quite a lot (you can read my review of this album in the Washington Post, here). We’ve included a few videos from that new album (as well as her old hits) at the bottom of this post.

Singer-songwriter Dawn Landes will open this show; she’s released four solid albums, the most recent of which came out in 2010 (so hopefully she’ll be playing some new tunes at this show!).

Ticket Giveaway: Franz Ferdinand at Strathmore, Thursday, 17 October 2013

Franz Ferdinand is coming to Strathmore in Bethesda on Thursday, 17 October, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets– before they go on sale to the public! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me which Franz Ferdinand song you’d most like to hear, and I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org) on Thursday, 20 June at midnight Eastern. Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly! Tickets go on sale on Friday, 21 June at 10 AM, so we’ll be sure to let the winner know before then!

Franz Ferdinand burst into our eardrums in the early 2000s with the uber-catchy “Take Me Out” from their debut album Franz Ferdinand. They released several more albums and then seemed to disappear for a few years– but they’re back now with a fury, announcing the release of a new album Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action this August. They haven’t started posting videos from the album yet, but they’ve posted this teaser, and they’ve been uploading other videos to their YouTube page like crazy in the past day(!), so if you want to get your Franz Ferdinand fix beyond the videos I’ve posted below, head on over to their YouTube page here. If you’ve never been to Strathmore before, their music hall is gorgeous and it’s easily metro-accessible via the red line’s Grosvenor stop. If you’re driving, parking in the metro lot is free for Strathmore guests!

Hey, if you’re new to ShowlistDC and wondering what this site is all about, check out our extensive calendar of upcoming events in the greater DC area (including Northern VA and Baltimore) and our concert recommendations. You can also follow us on twitter @showlistdc or like us on Facebook! While you’re checking all that out, check out the videos below and let us know which song you’re most excited about hearing!

If you come across this post after the contest has closed, or if you’re not the lucky winner, then you can pick up tickets for $58.50 on strathmore.org after 10 AM on Friday, 21 June. Good luck and enjoy the music!

The contest is now closed and the winner has been notified!
