Ticket giveaway: Mike Doughty at the 9:30 Club, Friday, 22 November 2013

Win tickets before they go on sale!

Singer-songwriter Mike Doughty is releasing an album of re-recorded songs from his time in his old band Soul Coughing. He’ll be playing those songs at the 9:30 Club on Friday, 22 November, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets, before they go on sale!! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me which Soul Coughing song you’d most want to hear Doughty cover in concert. On Thursday, 29 August at midnight Eastern, I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org), and I’ll let the winner know before tickets go on sale on Friday morning. Be sure to use a valid email address when you enter, so I can contact you if you win (and don’t worry: your email address won’t be posted publicly when you comment on this entry and won’t be added to any sort of mailing list). If you’re a hotmail user, please add showlistdc@gmail.com to your address book or no-spam list, as other hotmail users have had problems with emails from us not getting through. Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly!

Soul Coughing was a NYC-based alt-rock band from 1992 to 2000, and they broke up due to member disputes….so don’t expect to see a Soul Coughing reunion tour any time soon. But this show might be the closest you’ll get– after years of not really playing the old Soul Coughing songs live, former SC frontman Mike Doughty has just recorded an album of Soul Coughing covers (it’s due out on 9/17, and it’s called Circles Super Bon Bon Sleepless…). He’s touring in support of that and will be playing an all-Soul Coughing covers set at the 9:30 Club on November 22nd! As an aside, if you’re interested in reading about Doughty’s time in Soul Coughing, he wrote a book about that, which was published last year: The Book of Drugs.

You can check out a few of Soul Coughing’s songs via the videos embedded below, and while you’re giving those a spin, let us know which song you’d most want to hear Doughty cover in concert.

Ticket giveaway: Luray at 6th & I, Saturday, 24 August 2013

Banjo-driven indie folk band Luray is headlining 6th & I‘s intimate Downstairs space this Saturday, 24 August, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets! This is a particularly special show, because it’s the CD Release show for the group’s debut album The Wilder, which comes out officially next Tuesday August 27th. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me what you’d be doing on Saturday instead of going to this show, and I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org) on Thursday, 22 August at noon Eastern.

Luray is fronted by DC-based singer-songwriter Shannon Carey, and The Wilder was recorded in Eau Claire, Wisconsin with her brother Sean Carey (of S. Carey and Bon Iver) and also features her brother Colin Carey (vibes/drums) and husband Gabriel Wisniewski (electric guitar). But the heart of the band lies with her banjo, which adds hints of bluegrass to her folky indie-rock. Luray has been playing shows all over town for the past few years, playing with locals like Justin Jones, Justin Trawick, and Ms. Fridrich, as well as touring musicians like Jim White and the Spring Standards.

You can hear Luray’s music over at her Soundcloud page, and I’ve linked a few videos below.

Opening this show is local folk-rock band Kindlewood, whose music you can hear on their bandcamp page. We’ve put a Kindlewood video below as well!

Ticket giveaway: Okkervil River at the 9:30 Club, Monday 23 September 2013

Okkervil River is coming to the 9:30 Club on Monday, 23 September, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me what song you’d most want to hear them play, and I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org) on Thursday, 8 August at midnight Eastern.

Okkervil River is an indie-rock band from Austin, TX, that formed in 1998. They’ve released a ton of awesome albums (I think my favorite of theirs is probably 2005′s Black Sheep Boy) and have a new one coming out in September called the Silver Gymnasium, so I’m betting they’ll be playing lots of new songs at the show. In addition to their own music, Okkervil River have done a few other interesting projects; they were Roky Erickson‘s backing band for the excellent album True Love Cast Out All Evil, and to help promote their 2008 release the Stand Ins, they had a bunch of their friends record cover versions of their songs (including Bon Iver and AC Newman & Will Sheff).

The opening act for this show is singer-songwriter Mackenzie Scott, who records under the name Torres and released her first album, Torres, earlier his year.

We’ve put some Okkervil River videos (including a new song!!) and a Torres video at the bottom of this post, so check those out and let us know which song you’d most want to hear live at this show!
