Stuff to read :
• Not local but still worth mentioning: We reminded you yesterday that flash mobs aren’t cool, but apparently Renee Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma didn’t get the memo. The pair performed at a food court in Chicago with some Chicago high school students and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (apparently the CSO sent out an email announcing the concert , which reminds us that the only thing less cool than a flash mob is announcing the flash mob in advance . Seriously, people!). Anyway, as much as we hate flash mobs, we can bet that this performance was a step up from Fleming’s 2010 album Dark Hope , a collection of covers of songs by Muse (“Endlessly”), Band of Horses (“No One’s Gonna Love You”), Arcade Fire (“Intervention”), Tears For Fears (“Mad World”), and Peter Gabriel (“In Your Eyes”). (No, we did not make any of that up.) At the flash mob performance, Fleming kept with a safer song choice: “America the Beautiful”.
• Concert updates: Fiona Apple ‘s show tonight at 6th & I has been posponed a week, to Wednesday 3/28. Here’s a quick report from the Washington Post. The Washington Examiner, on the other hand, didn’t get the memo that the show is postponed and instead published this preview of the concert.
• Documentary alert: The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye opens this Friday at Landmark’s E Street Cinema. That’s “Genesis” as in Genesis P-Orridge of Psychic TV , and Chris Porter wrote this column about the two [Express].
• We’re still a little sick of seeing the word SXSW , but we don’t at all mind reading DCist’s SXSW 2012 Scouting Report , especially since they kept it local by telling us when those bands would be performing around here.
• Planning guides: DCist’s Weekly Music Agenda . Going Out Gurus’ Best Events for the week.
• Washington Women in Jazz Festival: Capital Bop has a nice interview with Amy K Bormet on the 2nd annual Washington Women in Jazz Festival , which runs from today through next Tuesday. We’ve got all the shows listed on our concert calendar , or you can check out the schedule of events on the WWJF page .
• Local band news: Listen to U.S. Royalty ‘s new single “Sleepy Eyes” [All Things Go].
• Marcus J. Moore looks back on The Five One [Washington CityPaper].
• Day 11 of Justin Moyer ‘s “Edie Sedgwick goes to SXSW” [Washington CityPaper].
• Live reviews: Charles T Downey on L’Arpeggiata at the Library of Congress [Washington Post]. Robert Battey on Ute Lemper at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater [Washington Post]. Stephen Bradley on Narrows at DC9 [Washington Times] (Key quotes: “DC has never had much of a hardcore scene, at least not like other major East Coast cities”. Also: “It’s not entirely surprising that so few hardcore bands are playing now.” I wonder how quotes like those would hold up on the DC Hardcore forums .) Katie Willmott on Dr. Dog at the 9:30 Club [the Vinyl District].

Stuff to read :
• Roger Catlin rants about Ticketmaster and its annoying fees and policies [Washington Post]. On the stupid fake-words that Ticketmaster makes customers enter, Catlin writes:
The method serves mostly to slow people down by having to retype the barely legible wavy words, while it allows scalpers to buy up every ticket to, say, a Bruce Springsteen show at Verizon Center on April 1 that sold out in one minute according to my computer. Can’t figure out why I got shut out while the local scalper Web site lists literally hundreds of tickets available at prices up to $1,000 each.
The problem is: everybody KNOWS how much Ticketmaster stinks, but if you want to go to a concert at a Ticketmaster venue, you’ve gotta use ‘em.
• Artomatic 2012 is still going to be in Crystal City– but at a different venue than previously announced [ARLnow]. Artomatic starts on May 18.
• David Mermelstein on the collaboration between pianist Christopher O’Riley (known for his adaptations of Radiohead songs) and cellist Matt Haimovitz (who is known for playing traditional classical music in non-traditional venues) [Washington Post].
• Book Review: Aaron Leitko on Gary Marcus ‘s book Guitar Zero: the New Musician and the Science of Learning (available on Amazon ).
In “Guitar Zero,” Marcus uses his musical midlife crisis to frame a discussion of the science of adult learning and music’s effect on the human brain. For the past couple of decades, developmental psychologists have believed that complex skills, such as playing an instrument, are best acquired during brief windows of time, usually in early childhood, when the brain is more malleable.
• Apparently everyone wants to talk to Fat Trel . Chris Richards at the Washington Post interviewed the rapper . Fat Trel was the cover of last week’s CityPaper as well.
• Hamil R. Harris reports on opera singers bringing “Art Songs” back to church [Washington Post].
• Day 9 of Justin Moyer ‘s “Edie Sedgwick goes to SXSW” [Washington CityPaper]. Also, Chris Richards has his latest SXSW report [Washington Post]. The corporate presence at this year’s SXSW felt oppressive, contaminating the festival’s hallowed musical ecosystem of sharing and discovery. Bemoaners have bemoaned that SXSW has slowly lost its soul over the course of 26 years, but this go-round was exponentially yuckier than last spring’s. Nearly every musical transaction felt sticky with Mountain Dew.
• Live Reviews: Megan Buerger on The-Dream at Fillmore Silver Spring [Washington Post]. Andy Hess on John K Samson at the Black Cat [DCist]. Anne Midgette on Vadim Repin at Strathmore [Washington Post]. Cecelia Porter on BSO at Strathmore [Washington Post]. We don’t know about you, but we’re already tired of all the tweets and articles about SXSW, and the festival hasn’t even really gotten going yet. We’re going to try to keep the SXSW coverage to a minimum here.
Stuff to read :
• the Washington CityPaper has a lengthy article about the Enterprise Jazz Club ‘s strange legal saga .
• DC’s Jay Bulger won the grand jury prize in the documentary category at SXSW for his film Beware of Mr. Baker , about Cream /Blind Faith drummer Ginger Baker [Washington Post]. Here’s a profile on Bulger and how he weaseled his way into Baker’s life from the Post a few weeks ago.
• You’re not at SXSW but you’re still rooting for the local bands: David Malitz talks about why Hume , Bluebrain , Nadastrom , and Oddisee should get the biggest buzz of the local acts at the festival this year [Washington Post].
• We’re glad you’re still here: There were no layoffs at the Washington CityPaper yesterday, but unfortunately, employees are all taking a 5% pay cut [DCist].
• Apparently concert poster analysis is becoming a daily thing at the Washington CityPaper. Yesterday they featured U Street Music Hall ‘s minimalism . The day before, it was Windian Records ‘ possible racism . Oh, and by the way, the CityPaper alerted us yesterday that Windian now has a new poster design . (What art will the CP feature today?!)
• Interview: the show was last night, but you can still read Michael J. West’s chat with drummer Andrew Cyrille [Washington CityPaper].
• Video: Arlington reggae group SOJA made their late-night debut Monday night on The Tonight Show , and ARLnow has the video .
• Concert guides: the Washington CityPaper’s This Week in Jazz . TBD tells you to keep it green this St Patty’s Day weekend.
• DC writer Marc Masters and NC writer Grayson Currin have published their latest column The Out Door [Pitchfork]. This installment touches on how collaborations cross borders.
• Live review: Charles T Downey on the Takacs Quartet at the Kennedy Center [Washington Post].

• Live reviews: Stephen Bradley on Anti-Flag at the Rock & Roll Hotel [Washington Times] (DRINKING GAME: take a shot every time the writer starts a sentence or clause with “it’s”.) Robert Battey skewers Dan Zhu ‘s performance of Mozart with Christoph Eschenbach [Washington Post]. (The review is almost more of a skewering of Eschenbach’s choice of Zhu than Zhu himself. To wit: Eschenbach has inexplicably allowed a middling violinist to hitch his wagon to Eschenbach’s considerable star. Ouch.) Jenn Bress on White Rabbits and Tennis at the Black Cat [the Vinyl District]. Kelly Kettering on the Black Keys at the Verizon Center [the Vinyl District].

Stuff to read :
• Have you heard live opera at the Court House metro? Katherine Boyle has an article/interview with countertenor Hisham Breedlove , who busks at the Metro. Notes from last night :
Last night, I stopped by the modestly-attended free-jazz show of Denis Beuret (trombone, electronics) + Elliott Levin (sax, spoken word) + drummers Weasel Walter + Marc Edwards . I’d never been to The Dunes in Columbia Heights before, but I’m now in love with the space– it feels like the performance is happening in a living room, since the space/gallery is nestled in an apartment building in a very residential part of ColHts. Not surprisingly, Walter completely stole the show– he’s hilarious to watch, and his chatter after songs was entertaining as well, although the quartet did not deliver the 17 additional tunes that Walter initially promised. It was disappointing that the crowd started leaving less than halfway through the group’s hourlong set, which ended at 10:45 (not that late, even for a school night!), but so it goes. Spot the metalhead : Walter himself was wearing a Malignancy T-shirt.

• We don’t like celebrity gossip. But this is both music- and DC-related, so we feel kind of obligated to include it.
