Articles

Planning Guides: Washington Post Going Out Guide’s best events this week and guide to free events this week and Memorial Day Nightlife Agenda. Brightest Young Things’ Shows to get pumped for this week.

• You missed it: David Malitz reports on the secret The Make-Up reunion show at Comet Ping Pong this weekend [Washington Post].

• Local band news: Magrudergrind was on Veep this weekend! Check out a clip of their performance [Metal Injection] (best description ever? they sound “like being operated on by a chimp with a hard-on and a hacksaw. radical stuff!”) and the Washington CityPaper’s review. And if you’ve forgotten how this all came about, here’s the Washington CityPaper’s interview with the band about how it all came about in the first place.

• Time Machine: Read this 1979 Geoffrey Himes article on disco [Washington Post]. [N]o music since the earliest rock ‘n’ roll has inspired the kind of backlash that disco has suffered. At rock concerts now, it seems every fourth person is wearing a t-shirt with an obscene, anti-disco slogan on it. Meanwhile, backstage the performers are dreaming up new put-downs of disco for interviewers. If one listens to the records, however, disco hardly seems worth all the fuss. It’s simple, harmless dance music that’s unlikely to either ruin or revolutionize popular music. Most of the music is mediocre; the best of it has the irresistible energy of any perfected pop form. The most important pop music of any era, however, is seldom the music that sells the most. Disco is not the music of this era that will last.

• Local girl dates Justin Bieber: OK, not exactly “dates”, but Justin Bieber invited Cady Elmer of Poquosan High School (Hampton Roads area of Virginia) to the Billboard Music Awards [Washington Post].

• Watch: High school filmmaker Hannah Hoffman made a 30-minute documentary on Sockets Records [Washington CityPaper].

• Listen/watch: Yann Tiersen stopped by NPR’s DC office for a Tiny Desk Concert.

• Local listening: Columbia Nights featuring Sarai Abdul-Malik, “In the Glow” [DC Music Live].

• Local listening (and preview): America Hearts‘ “A Whole Lotta Love” (not a Led Zeppelin cover) [DC Music Download]. At the Black Cat on Thursday.

• Local music video of the day: Tabi Bonney‘s “Castle on a Cloud” [Hometown Sounds DC].

• Local venue news: the discrimination lawsuit filed by Enterprise Jazz Club against its owner has been dropped [Washington CityPaper].

• Celebrate Chuck Brown: There’s an online petition seeking Chuck Brown Day and a Go-Go Museum [DCist].

• Anne Midgette on the deaths of Herbert Breslin (Pavarotti’s manager) and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (German singer) [Washington Post].

Live Reviews

• Erica Bruce’s photos of Fishbone at the State Theater [Washington CityPaper].

• Jonathan Fischer’s mini-review alongside Erica Bruce’s photos of The Make-Up at Comet Ping Pong [Washington CityPaper].

Stuff to read:
• Talented teen? Check out Megan Buerger’s article on DC-CAPital Stars Talent Competition and former competitor Clifton Williams [Washington Post]. This year’s top 10 will compete on Monday night at the Kennedy Center, judged by choreographer/actress Debbie Allen, go-go music pioneer Chuck Brown, and Emmy-nominated music producer Rickey Minor.
• If you haven’t been to the Hamilton yet, you can at least get a sense of the venue in this profile on DC Style Is Real. We’ve got the Hamilton’s upcoming calendar.
• Local record label Windian Records is celebrating its 3rd birthday next month with a few shows at Montserrat House. Jonathan L Fischer wonders if the show poster is racist [Washington CityPaper].
• Interview: Alexia Kauffman talks to Hank3 [We Love DC]. We’ve read more engaging interviews in our time (that’s code for: we’re not sure how much the interviewer knew about Hank3 before she talked to him), but we do love the guy. Hank3 plays at the 9:30 Club on Thursday.
Day 5 of Justin Moyer‘s “Edie Sedgwick goes to SXSW” [Washington CityPaper].
• Profile: Check out the history of the MPD in rap videos [Washington CityPaper].
• EARWORMS: NPR has a feature on why that song gets stuck in your head.
• Live reviews: Stephen Bradley on Anti-Flag at the Rock & Roll Hotel [Washington Times] (DRINKING GAME: take a shot every time the writer starts a sentence or clause with “it’s”.) Robert Battey skewers Dan Zhu‘s performance of Mozart with Christoph Eschenbach [Washington Post]. (The review is almost more of a skewering of Eschenbach’s choice of Zhu than Zhu himself. To wit: Eschenbach has inexplicably allowed a middling violinist to hitch his wagon to Eschenbach’s considerable star. Ouch.) Jenn Bress on White Rabbits and Tennis at the Black Cat [the Vinyl District]. Kelly Kettering on the Black Keys at the Verizon Center [the Vinyl District].

ShowlistDC Music Notes: Monday 03-12-12

Stuff to read:
• Have you heard live opera at the Court House metro? Katherine Boyle has an article/interview with countertenor Hisham Breedlove, who busks at the Metro. Of course, no story about busking at a Metro station would be complete without mentioning the 2007 story of Joshua Bell playing his Stradivarius at L’Enfant Plaza (an article which has been read more times than Bell earned tips that morning– a fact which is also mentioned a lot when talking about Metro buskers).
• Washington Post pop critic Chris Richards is retiring the paper’s Click Track blog. Richards will now post on the Style Blog, and David Malitz will post on the Going Out Guide blog. And, of course, we’ll still round up the Post’s musical writings here on Music Notes.
• If you haven’t heard enough about SXSW before the festival has even started, then check out Justin Moyer‘s series at the Washington CityPaper, “Edie Sedgwick goes to SXSW”: Day 1 + Day 2 + Day 3.
• Want to get college credit for talking about Lady Gaga? At the University of Maryland, you can. The school is offering a new seminar called “Advanced Special Topics in Women’s Studies: Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Nicki Minaj: Gender and Spectacular Consumption”, the Diamondback reports.
• Blast from the past: Timothy S. Robinson at the Washington Post dug up the Post’s July 1971 obituary of Jim Morrison.
• DC writer Zach Kelly on Matthewdavid‘s Jewelry [Pitchfork].
• Live Reviews: Dave McKenna on the Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys at the Verizon Center [Washington Post] (FYI: [N]o combo that has songs as great as “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor” should ever be this bland. Ouch.) Stephen Brookes on a performance of the younger Bach‘s work at the Library of Congress [Washington Post]. Cecelia Porter on the NSO‘s “Hungarian Dances” program at the Kennedy Center [Washington Post].

Audiovisual stuff:
Real Estate played a Tiny Desk Concert at NPR’s DC office.
