Luray is fronted by DC-based singer-songwriter Shannon Carey, and The Wilder was recorded in Eau Claire, Wisconsin with her brother Sean Carey (of S. Carey and Bon Iver) and also features her brother Colin Carey (vibes/drums) and husband Gabriel Wisniewski (electric guitar). But the heart of the band lies with her banjo, which adds hints of bluegrass to her folky indie-rock. Luray has been playing shows all over town for the past few years, playing with locals like Justin Jones, Justin Trawick, and Ms. Fridrich, as well as touring musicians like Jim White and the Spring Standards.

Okkervil River is an indie-rock band from Austin, TX, that formed in 1998. They’ve released a ton of awesome albums (I think my favorite of theirs is probably 2005′s Black Sheep Boy) and have a new one coming out in September called the Silver Gymnasium, so I’m betting they’ll be playing lots of new songs at the show. In addition to their own music, Okkervil River have done a few other interesting projects; they were Roky Erickson‘s backing band for the excellent album True Love Cast Out All Evil, and to help promote their 2008 release the Stand Ins, they had a bunch of their friends record cover versions of their songs (including Bon Iver and AC Newman & Will Sheff).
The opening act for this show is singer-songwriter Mackenzie Scott, who records under the name Torres and released her first album, Torres, earlier his year.

Scottish indie-pop band Frightened Rabbit is coming to the 9:30 Club on Tuesday, 29 October for two sets, and ShowlistDC is giving away two pair of tickets! Frightened Rabbit formed in 2003 and have released four solid albums: 2006′s Sing the Greys, 2008′s the Midnight Organ Fight, 2010′s the Winter of Mixed Drinks, and most recently, 2013′s Pedestrian Verse. More importantly, they put on a great live show; I’ve gotten the chance to review their show twice: April 2010 (at the Black Cat) and November 2010 (at the 9:30 Club). Note that the band has gotten even more popular since 2010; they sold out the 9:30 Club in April of this year, so it makes sense that they’re playing two different shows in the same night. (and did we mention that we’re giving away tickets to both of their shows???)

Savages are an all-female post-punk revival band from London that formed in 2011. Obviously influenced by Siouxsie & the Banshees, Savages’ first album Silence Yourself came out earlier this year to great critical acclaim, but the hype had already been building: they played a show in July at the Rock & Roll Hotel that sold out months in advance(!). Beth Orton is a folk/folktronica singer-songwriter from England who started her career with collaborations with William Orbit and the Chemical Brothers but soon transitioned to her own solo releases, starting in 1996 with Trailer Park, which featured the haunting “She Cries Your Name” and a cover of Phil Spector/the Ronettes’ “I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine”. She followed that up a few years later with Central Reservation, whose song “Stolen Car” I actually remember getting some radio air play back in the late 1990s. After a few more albums, Orton went quiet for six(!) years, finally releasing a new album last year, Sugaring Season, which I liked quite a lot (you can read my review of this album in the Washington Post, here). We’ve included a few videos from that new album (as well as her old hits) at the bottom of this post.

Franz Ferdinand burst into our eardrums in the early 2000s with the uber-catchy “Take Me Out” from their debut album Franz Ferdinand. They released several more albums and then seemed to disappear for a few years– but they’re back now with a fury, announcing the release of a new album Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action this August. They haven’t started posting videos from the album yet, but they’ve posted this teaser, and they’ve been uploading other videos to their YouTube page like crazy in the past day(!), so if you want to get your Franz Ferdinand fix beyond the videos I’ve posted below, head on over to their YouTube page here. If you’ve never been to Strathmore before, their music hall is gorgeous and it’s easily metro-accessible via the red line’s Grosvenor stop. If you’re driving, parking in the metro lot is free for Strathmore guests!

Junip is a Swedish folk/psychdedlic-rock band that’s fronted by singer-songwriter José González (vocals, guitar). The band also includes Elias Araya (drums) and Tobias Winterkorn (organ, Moog). They’ve released a handful of EPs, but their first full-length album, Fields, came out in 2010. To make things a little confusing, the group made its second album self-titled, and Junip came out on April 23rd of this year. It’s been met with mostly positive reviews (you can read reviews from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and AllMusic), which is good news, since you can expect the band to play a lot of songs from that new album live. If you’re curious what they sound like, we’ve included a few videos from the new album at the bottom of this post.
In addition to Junip, there are two opening bands on this show: the Danish soul/electro duo Quadron and the London-based Barbarossa (which features members of José González’s live backing band). All in all, it’s going to be a great night of music (three bands from three different countries!), so take a moment to think about what else you’d be doing this Saturday night and let me know in the comments for your chance to go to this show! I usually like to give a little background on the artists that I do giveaways for, but Courtney Love really needs no introduction. After a brief stint in Faith No More (?!), she founded Hole in 1989 and released her first solo album America’s Sweetheart in 2004. She recently contributed guest vocals to the latest Fall Out Boy album (there’s a linked video below), and she allegedly has some new solo tunes this year, so you might get a sneak peek of those at this show– if she makes it that far. Best Coast is a Los Angeles indie-rock band who released its first album, Crazy For You, in 2010. In many ways, that album was the indie-rock summer jam of that year, with its hazy, catchy, carefree tunes and Bethany Cosentino’s often simplistic, yet totally honest lyrics (“I wish my cat could talk”, she sighs on “Goodbye“). It scored the elusive “Best New Music” tag with an 8.4 from Pitchfork and showed up on a ton of year-end lists that year as well. Best Coast followed it up last year with The Only Place, teaming up with producer Jon Brion for an album that was less fuzzy and put Cosentino’s vocals and lyrics front and center in the mix. It wasn’t quite as critically-beloved as Crazy For You, but it still had a nice indie-pop sound.

The Killers formed in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2001 and released their first album, Hot Fuss in 2004. That album sparked several hits, including “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me”. They followed that up in 2006 with the album Sam’s Town, which wasn’t as well-received critically but did produce their second-highest-charting single, “When You Were Young”. After their next album, Day & Age, the Killers took an 18-month hiatus (during which frontman Brandon Flowers released a solo album entitled Flamingo), returning last September with their most recent studio album, Battle Born. Throughout the course of their history, the Killers have recorded a ton of catchy songs, so check out some of their videos below and let me know in the comments which song you’d most want to hear them play live!
