Best Coast is coming to the 9:30 Club on Tuesday, 4 June, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me why you want to go to this concert, and I’ll pick the winner at random (using random.org) on Thursday, 23 May at midnight Eastern. Be sure to use a valid email address when you enter, so I can contact you if you win (and don’t worry: your email address won’t be posted publicly when you comment on this entry and won’t be added to any sort of mailing list). If you’re a hotmail user, please add showlistdc@gmail.com to your address book or no-spam list, as other hotmail users have had problems with emails from us not getting through. Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly!

Best Coast is a Los Angeles indie-rock band who released its first album, Crazy For You, in 2010. In many ways, that album was the indie-rock summer jam of that year, with its hazy, catchy, carefree tunes and Bethany Cosentino’s often simplistic, yet totally honest lyrics (“I wish my cat could talk”, she sighs on “Goodbye“). It scored the elusive “Best New Music” tag with an 8.4 from Pitchfork and showed up on a ton of year-end lists that year as well. Best Coast followed it up last year with The Only Place, teaming up with producer Jon Brion for an album that was less fuzzy and put Cosentino’s vocals and lyrics front and center in the mix. It wasn’t quite as critically-beloved as Crazy For You, but it still had a nice indie-pop sound.

You can check out some of Best Coast’s songs below, and you can check out the two opening bands as well: Guards‘ Bandcamp is here, and Lovely Bad Things‘ Bandcamp is here. While you’re taking a listen, tell us why you want to check out this show: are you a fan of their albums? have you seen them live before? do you just want to check out what the hype is about? do you also wish your cat could talk? Or are you just looking for ways to get out of the house now that the Caps are out of the playoffs? Tell us why you want to go see the band on 6/4 at the 9:30 Club!

  1. had a ticket to their show in austin, went back to the car to nap during the shitty openers, ended up passing out for the night and missed the whole show!

  2. Who doesn’t wish their cat could talk? Best Coast is a lot of fun- would love to see them play. Thanks!

  3. I’ve been dying to see Best Coast ever since I heard their song “The Only Place.” I’ve probably played that song 100 times since discovering it.

  4. The first time I heard ‘Crazy for You’, I felt like someone had written the musical score to my life.

…”Our Deal” is the story of one significant relationship in particular, and the video made me cry the first time I watched it.

I missed them at Bonnaroo two years ago because my friends got drunk too early, and I didn’t want to go to Centeroo alone.

This would be an awesome opportunity! (And I’m working 2 jobs to keep everything together, and this would make my year.)

  5. Because I’ll be interning in DC from the West Coast, possibly homesick, and definitely in the mood for something that reminds me of home.

  6. Best Coast is amazing and I have probably never related a song more than ‘Boyfriend’ before.

  7. I moved to Cali right around the time Crazy for You came out but kept missing them live. Now that I’m back in DC, anytime I listen to Best Coast it’s like I’m back in Cali and listening to my friend talk about her life. Love it and I would love to see them live.

  8. Last summer when they came to DC, I had accidentally gotten too drunk the night before and couldn’t make it to the show. Biggest regret. They’ve been my favorite band for/Bev’s been my idol and these tickets would be great because I’m poor

  9. I’ve been wanting to see Best Coast since I read an interview with Bethany Cosentino in a magazine and listened to her music as a result!

  10. Best Coast is phenomenal. Their music is so inspirational and the entire Crazy For You album means a lot to me personally. I would really love to see them live, I’d appreciate the experience so much.

  11. My best friend and I love Best Coast and I’m going away for school next year, so it would be awesome to get a chance to listen to our favorite band with my best friend.

    • Congratulations, you’re the random winner! Check your email for more information!

  12. I’m in DC for the summer, and I want to see as many shows as possible, plus Best Coast is freaking awesome and my boyfriend would be jealous :D

  13. Bethany, you so get me. Your music is the soundtrack to my life. I just love you

  14. I got injured at work before they played in Baltimore and couldn’t afford a ticket. would love to see them and pbt in DC.

  15. Saw them at Bonnaroo in 2011 and they were amazing. They came on my shuffle on my way to work this morning and was going to buy tickets today but then stumbled upon this!!!

  16. My dad went and saw them last summer in Cleveland, but I was here in DC. He sent me a picture of himself having drinks with them at the bar.

  17. I am a broke struggling college student that just graduated film school and I’ve been listening to best coast since I heard “Boyfriend” ! Oh and I give you guys big credit for putting Gambino and other celebs in the “Our Deal” video.. it was genius!

  18. Saw them in Baltimore and absolutely loved them live. Would love to have the experience again!

  19. saw ‘em last time they came thru, loved the show…wanna keep the tradition alive…

  20. I want to drink with Snacks.
Also, I’ve been listening to Best Coast since 2010 and I’m such a huge fan.

  21. Best Coast is one of my favorite bands and I missed them the last time they were in town. I just lost my job so I can’t afford tickets to the show but I am dying to see them.

  22. Because I live in a small town with absolutely nothing to do! Need to get out of it for a few days!

  23. Best Coast is my favorite!! I have seen her live 4 or 5 times… and every time I have gone by myself because no one ever wants to go with me. Going to shows with great music alone are the best…. but having 2 tickets would be ideal :)

  24. I saw them with Wavves in San Francisco, my old home. They always make me think of California in the best way. Hope I get em!

  25. The Best Coast was the first band I discovered on my own. Every time I listen to my “Boyfriend” or “The Only Place for me”, I am reminded that there is something or someone else out there. Its my escape.

  26. Best Coast music gets me through my darkness days and always makes me happy again. That’s what music is suppose to make you feel. <3

  27. I just got home from school for the summer and I’ve never seen Best Coast live plus I love the 9:30 club :) Best Coast = perfect summer tunes

  28. As an LA native in D.C., I’d love to see Best Coast in concert at the 9:30 club. Their songs capture the laid-back, summery LA vibe that I miss so dearly.

  29. Why give tix to anyone else?
I love the ocean, (not) a babe
Got no funds, I love Wavves
This is the only show for me

  30. Best Coast meets East Coast…can’t think of a better way to kick off the summer!!!

  31. I literally love Best Coast, no joke!
I have all their albums in my iTunes but I’ve never seen you guys in person :-( If I won, that would be pretty awesome! c:

  32. Best Coast is such a unique band with a summery touch. Their music means so much to me and I would love to see them live for the first time to appreciate how amazing they are!

  33. Would like to puff the magic dragon with Bethany + cat over wine and crumpets

  34. WELLL, it’s my last day of high school ever and I love Best Coast and I wish my cat could talk so he could explain why he wakes me up at 3am every morning. And did I mention I love Best Coast?

  35. Soo I only discovered this band about a month ago but I literally cannot stop listening to their albums. Pretty sure I listened to Crazy for You at least 3 times today.
