• DC’s used record stores are catching a break this week [Washington CityPaper]. While record stores with some used inventory, used book stores, and vintage and antique shops do have to obtain a secondhand business license—as opposed to the less restrictive general business license—they’ll have more than seven days to do it. And regulators at DCRA are taking a close look at the secondhand business license’s more onerous requirements.

• DC writer Marc Masters and NC writer Grayson Currin have written another edition of their column The Out Door [Pitchfork]. In this edition of our monthly experimental music column, “The Out Door,” we discuss the storied career of Swans and Rhys Chatham-collaborator Jonathan Kane of the band February, look at the inventive, underrated legacy of San Francisco band rRope and provide you with an alternative Record Store Day shopping list. But first we explore recent diverse experiments in spoken word.

• Listen: Local music blog (and festival organizer) Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie is celebrating its one-year anniversary…. by giving us songs from 20 of the bands that are performing at this year’s STPPFest. The fest will be October 5, 6, and 7.

• For Sale: King Giant guitarist Todd Ingram is selling the Flying V he played in the band’s “Appomatox” video. It’s got classic 57 pickups and an ebony fret board and was purchased specifically for the video. Check the link for how to contact TI if you’re interested in this piece of DC metal history.

• Metallomusikum continues her countdown to Maryland DeathFest with a profile of Bloody Phoenix.

• Trisha Yearwood will be following in Lisa Loeb’s footsteps with a cooking show on the Food Network [Washington Examiner]. “For me, cooking is very connected to my family and friends,” said Yearwood. “Every recipe on the show carries wonderful memories with my loved ones. … I really see this as a tribute to my mom [Gwen Yearwood] who passed away last year.”

• Uber-hipster blog Brightest Young Things is expanding to New York [Washington CityPaper]. 2011 was Brightest Young Things’ most successful year, and its first profitable one, [BYT leader Svetlana] Legetic says. But she isn’t inching back from the operation’s online presence to take advantage of the breathing room that comes with a bigger staff. (The site now has six full-time employees with benefits, plus two part-timers and an army of volunteer contributors, compared to three full-timers a year ago.) As far as bylines go, Legetic will still write the site’s weekend events newsletter, and guide its more ambitious editorial projects. But a lot of her energy in the next few months will involve Brightest Young Things’ more imperial ambitions. This summer, the site is expanding to New York.

• The Washington Post’s sixth annual Peeps contest (sorry, we just can’t bring ourselves to call it by its official name, “Peeps Show”) has concluded. We do love this music-related one, so kudos to Derek Hills and Brinda Krishnan (of the band Not My Sister) for their sugary creation! There are a few close-ups here and here and here.

• Venue news: Strathmore has announced its summer season [Washington Post]. We’ve got their shows listed here.

• Local band press: Southern metal rockers King Giant talk to ThisIsNotAScene.com.

• Local arts news: Scott Tucker (Cornell University’s choral director) will be taking over as the head of the Choral Arts Society [Washington Post]. The Society’s current head, Norman Scribner founded the organization 46 years ago and is retiring at the end of this season. Tucker’s experience includes fundraising (of particular interest in today’s climate), commissioning new work — he commissioned more than 30 new pieces while at Cornell, including works by Augusta Read Thomas, Chen Yi and Libby Larsen — and world music. He spent part of a sabbatical year in South Africa, learning traditional music by rote from an expert who requested that he not write anything down, saying, according to Tucker, that “those staff lines are like prison bars to the music.”

• Tittsworth is really excited about the return of Trouble & Bass to DC (and has a pair of tickets to give away to a promotion-friendly twitter user).

• Christopher Porter on Doug Aitken‘s “Song 1″ at the Hirshhorn [Express].

• Concert planners: DCist’s This Week in Jazz. TBD celebrates April Fools’ weekend with shows that are not a joke. The Going Out Guide has compiled all the shows that go on sale this week.

ShowlistDC Music Notes: Monday 02-06-12

We here at ShowlistDC have an ArtsBook-shaped hole in our hearts and inboxes this morning, as TBD’s Arts Editor (and daily ArtsBook scribe) Andrew Beaujon has joined Pointer as Senior Online Reporter. We’ll miss Beaujon’s thorough compilation of the DC area’s arts news– and his snarky commentary along the way. In his absence, here are a few DC-area music news worth sharing today:

Things to read:
• Sharon van Etten is the name that’s going to be all over the indie-rock news this week, as her new album Tramp comes out this week, and she’s playing the Black Cat on Saturday (as recommended by ShowlistDC!). Lots to read here– Marc Masters has a lengthy chat with SVE in the Washington Post, and NPR has a piece on the indie-folkster as well.
• Miss the Super Bowl’s Halftime show (with Madonna, LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, MIA, and Cee-Lo)? Jon Pareles over at the New York Times gives a summary. (The only quasi-scandalous thing that happened: MIA flipped the bird. Pitchfork has some video.)
• Maura Judkis on Apple’s Siri joinig Erykah Badu and Biz Markie as a guest vocalist for the Flaming Lips [Washington Post].
