Ticket giveaway: the xx and Grizzly Bear at Merriweather Post Pavilion, Sunday 16 June 2013

The xx and Grizzly Bear are coming to Merriweather Post Pavilion on Sunday, 16 June, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of lawn seats– before they go on sale to the public! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me which song (by either of those two bands) you most want to hear at the concert, and I’ll pick the winners at random (using random.org) on Thursday, 14 February at midnight Eastern. Be sure to use a valid email address when you enter, so I can contact you if you win (and don’t worry: your email address won’t be posted publicly when you comment on this entry and won’t be added to any sort of mailing list). If you’re a hotmail user, please add showlistdc@gmail.com to your address book or no-spam list, as other hotmail users have had problems with emails from us not getting through. Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly! Tickets go on sale on Friday, 15 February at 10 AM, so we’ll be sure to let the winner know before then!

The xx is an English indie-pop band that formed in 2005 but didn’t release its first album until 2009 (the self-titled xx). They followed that up last year with the excellent Coexist, and over the past few years, they’ve played at a bunch of festivals (and their music has been on a ton of TV shows), so it’ll be awesome to have them headline a big space like MPP! If you’ve already heard a lot of the xx’s music, you might be interested in Jamie xx (aka Jamie Smith)’s remix of the group’s song “Sunset”, which we’ve linked to below.

Brooklyn indie-rock band Grizzly Bear formed over a decade ago and has released a number of great albums; 2006′s Yellow House is what first put them on the map, thanks in no small part to a Best New Music note from Pitchfork, but its two subsequent albums– 2009′s Veckatimest and 2012′s Shields– each received that “Best New Music” nod as well. They’ve got a new video out for their song “Gun-Shy” which we’ve linked to below, so have a listen!

Hey, if you’re new to ShowlistDC and wondering what this site is all about, check out our extensive calendar of upcoming events in the greater DC area (including Northern VA and Baltimore) and our concert recommendations. You can also follow us on twitter @showlistdc or like us on Facebook! While you’re checking all that out, listen to the two songs below and let us know which song from these bands’ catalogues you’d most like to hear live!

If you come across this post after the contest has closed, or if you’re not the lucky winner, then you can pick up tickets for $30-40, plus service fees, via ticketfly.com after 10 AM on Friday, 15 February.

The contest hsa closed and the winner has been notified!

  1. I’d love to hear Reunion/Sunset by the XX. The segue from one song into the next is sublime.

I would also love to hear Gun-Shy by Grizzly Bear, the latest and perhaps best single from Shields.

  2. I would love to hear “On a Neck, On a Spit” by Grizzly Bear!!! Best song off of Yellow House:)

  3. I’d love to hear an epic and extended version of “Sun In Your Eyes,” my favorite song on “Shields!”

  4. I love all of your songs, but if I can only pick one then it will have to be Foreground. I used to play that song for my students while teaching art classes and it had a very calming effect…thank you!

  5. Grizzly Bear – While You Wait For The Others
    The xx – Angels

Two Weeks is nice, too, but it doesn’t give chills as much as WYWFTO does.

  6. Heart Skipped a Beat – The XX. This song pounds on so many bittersweet memories for me, it would be incredible to see it live.

  7. I know you’ll play “Yet Again,” which I’m really looking forward to, but I really want to hear The Knife!

  8. If you both can’t play your whole discography, I’ll settle for hearing On a neck, on a spit from grizz and Sunset by the xx. Also all of you doing a cover of My boo would be groovy.

  9. I would love to see Grizzly Bear play “Lullabye” at MPP. “Yellow House” was one of the most surprising albums I’ve ever heard, and hearing it made me confident I had encountered a band I could cherish for the rest of my life.

  10. I want to hear 2 Weeks – Grizzly Bear and The XX’s Intro!!!

  26. I would die if I won deffinatly would love to see both live such a huge fan!!
    Grizzly bear- cheerleader or Dory
    the xx- infinity

  27. Shift from Horn of Plenty, that beautiful piece has helped me through a ton of stressful situations. Other than that, Ready, Able, the tune that got me into Grizzly Bear and the one I jam out to the most on the Veckatimest vynil!

  28. I’d love to hear Grizzly Bear’s “Deep Blue Sea” it’s one of my favorite songs and it was playing when my boyfriend first said “I love you.”

  29. On a neck, on a spit!!!! Always, love you guys and the xx I wanna see you together so very much, I would appreciate being selected forever <3

  30. Without a single doubt I wanna hear “I Live With You” live with people who wanna scream the lyrics.

  39. Foreground is one of my all-time favorite songs. I would love to hear it at MPP!

  40. Grizzly Bear – Ready, Able <3

I waited 3 hours alone through an awful band at Coachella to see you guys front row!!! Worth every moment :)

  41. “Fine for Now” – Grizzly Bear. It’s possibly the best song of the 21st century.

  42. I’d love to hear Grizzly Bear’s version of Boy From School.

    Also from the XX, Tides.

  43. While You Wait for the Others and Sleeping Ute among many others would be awesome.

  44. I’d love to hear you play the complete ‘On A Neck, On A Spit’ (starting at ‘My messenger in disguise …’) The times I saw you in NYC you started at the ‘fast part’ (‘These days …’).

But for sure keep doing the stripped-down version of ‘All I Ask’ – great way to close the show!

    Peace.

  45. Sun In Your Eyes.

Crazy dense. Crazy good. Goosebumps and waves of warmth and like every feeling ever.

  47. Fix It by Grizzly Bear. I don’t even live near this place (I’m in LA) but fuck, I’d love it if they played it and somebody happened to record it.

  48. I would love nothing better then to finally hear Grizzly Bear perform my favorite song ever: “Little Brother”.

  49. I would love to hear FIX IT. The version Grizzly Bear closed sets with during the Veckatimest tour – to die for! Also, it would transport me back to 2009, which kicks the respective asses of all subsequent years. Sigh.
