The Joy Formidable is coming to the 9:30 Club on Sunday, 21 April, and ShowlistDC is giving away a pair of tickets! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me why you want to go to this concert, and I’ll pick the winners at random (using random.org) on Tuesday, 12 February at 5 PM Eastern. Be sure to use a valid email address when you enter, so I can contact you if you win (and don’t worry: your email address won’t be posted publicly when you comment on this entry and won’t be added to any sort of mailing list). If you’re a hotmail user, please add showlistdc@gmail.com to your address book or no-spam list, as other hotmail users have had problems with emails from us not getting through. Also note that we ask winners to respond within 24 hours, or else we have to pick another winner, so make sure to check your email regularly!
There’s a lot to like about The Joy Formidable: big hooks, catchy songs, a charismatic frontwoman, and a fun live show; the Welsh band formed in 2007 and just released its second album Wolf’s Law. The album’s been getting some great reviews– an A- from the AV club, a 7.2 from Pitchfork, and 3.5 stars from Rolling Stone. It’s full of hooky guitar anthems that could fill booming spaces (it’s probably not that surprising that they opened for the Foo Fighters at the Verizon Center in 2011), so the 9:30 Club should be a great venue to see them at! They most recently played locally at St. Stephen’s Church last November, and you can see a review of that show and some photos of the band here.
If all the press buzz isn’t enough to convince you, then have a listen for yourself: they’ve got a video out for their new song “This Ladder is Ours” which we’ve linked below, and they’ve also got the audio for all of Wolf’s Law streaming on their youtube page. And if that’s not reason enough to go to the show, then check out the two opening bands, Brighton alt-rock duo Blood Red Shoes and Massachusetts band You Won’t, and tell us why you’re most excited for this show: is it the new songs? an old favorite from TJF’s first album The Big Roar? Did you miss out on tickets to their last show before it sold out? Tell us why you want to go see the band on 4/21 at the 9:30 Club!

I love their music, but I haven’t had a chance to see them live before. I’m excited that I finally have a clear schedule for one of their shows!
I LOVE The Joy! I want to see them so that I can hear the new music & buy a copy of the new CD :) I like to buy CDs directly from the bands when they’re on tour. Yes, I still buy CDs.
Because I need the noise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would like to attend this show because I like music and I like shows and I spent some time on the YouTube investigating this band yesterday…
Heard all kinds of great things about this band live but haven’t been lucky enough to catch them yet.
Because Ritzi’s hypnotic eyes compel me to go!
I greatly enjoy this band’s recordings but have never seen them live. I would like to see them, but I don’t go to too many shows that cost more than 12 bucks these days out of necessity.
Just heard of them, and excited to hear more live!
Because I want to lose my shit during Whirring live.
Last time they were in DC I was out of town on business. I NEED to see them!
I’d love to win these tickets for my husband- he loves the Joy Formidable and we’ve never gotten it together to see them. He spends a lot of days at work with Ritzy Bryan cranked up loud in his earphones. What better Valentines Day present than winning him a pair of tix?
I’ve newly discovered the Joy and I’ve fallen in love and would love to consummate the relationship by seeing them live! Please!
Friends of mine say they are amazing and I want to see for myself.
Because I love Welsh bands!
They’re one of the most exciting bands of the last few years and a great live show.
I’d simply enjoy seeing these guys play live.
I must hear Whirring live! Thanks.
Joy Formidable rocks! Last year I went but had to get there late b/c I had class that night. I’d love to actually get to see the whole show this time!
Because last time I ended up being sick the day of the concert.
I need to see them because they are amazing.
I need to see them because a) they’re amazing and b) I have nothing else to do that day so why not!

My friend loves Joy Formidable and I would love to take her as a belated birthday present!
I have to see The Joy Formidable live so I can get hair tips from Ritzy Bryan. She has the best hair EVER!
Cause the 9:30 Club and The Joy Formidable are such a great comination
To show my wife and kids that all this time I spend on music websites at night is not a waste.
Would love to see them because they’re just a really good band!
I want to go to this show because I really like this band.
I have been unable to attend any of their shows due to scheduling, selling out, and a kid being born! help me out here, please.
I want the joy of seeing The Joy Formidable live! A 930 cupcake can’t hurt either.
Saw TJF at St Stephens last year and ran the merch table with my friend Carlos. Didn’t really get to “enjoy” the show. would love to see them again .
I was unable to attend shows coz of scheduling
Please let me go
I was sick and missed the show at St. Stephens, so getting free tickets to this would be pretty sweet!
I’m a huge fan of their music, and saw them at the 930 club the last time they came through. Great harmonies, and the stage setup was beautiful. Would love a chance to see them again!
Seen them over three times and I must say Ritzy can wail on that guitar.
To experience new music!
